Know before you go
- Neuschwanstein Castle admission is tied to the time on your ticket. Be in the courtyard before that time. Late arrivals cannot join. Count back: the official ticket page asks for arrival in Hohenschwangau 1.5 to 2 hours before castle admission.
- Walking from the Ticket Center Hohenschwangau to Neuschwanstein Castle takes 30 to 40 minutes on the castle's directions page. You need moderate fitness for the train tour. The day trip is not recommended for visitors with mobility difficulties.
- The shuttle bus costs €3.50 uphill or €5 return on the Marienbrücke page. The ride from car park P4 takes about 15 minutes. The remaining walk down to the castle is steep and takes about 15 minutes. The shuttle bus does not run on snow or ice.
- The horse carriage costs €8 uphill and €4 downhill on the Ticket Center's transport page. The ride from opposite Hotel Müller takes about 20 minutes. You still walk uphill for 10 to 15 minutes. Neither the shuttle bus nor the horse carriage has a timetable or reservations.
- Regular size backpacks and handbags can go on the castle tour. Bulky hiking backpacks and large luggage cannot. The Ticket Center's family page allows strollers in the courtyard, with a designated room for storage during the visit.
- Photography and filming inside Neuschwanstein Castle are prohibited on the castle's visitor information page. Exterior photographs for private use are allowed. Infants on the train tour must sit on an adult's lap.
