Know before you go

  • The castle's directions page gives 30 to 40 minutes on foot from the Ticket Center Hohenschwangau to Neuschwanstein Castle. The uphill road is steep. Count back: reach Hohenschwangau 1.5 to 2 hours before your castle entry time, as the official ticket page advises. Be in the courtyard before your tour starts.
  • The shuttle bus costs €3.50 uphill or €5 return on the Ticket Center's transport page. The shuttle bus takes about 15 minutes from car park P4 to the stop near Marienbrücke. Your walk from the upper stop to the castle takes 15 minutes down a steep path. Snow and ice stop the shuttle bus.
  • The horse carriage costs €8 uphill and €4 downhill. The ride from opposite Hotel Müller to the stop below Neuschwanstein Castle takes about 20 minutes. The walk from the carriage stop to the castle takes 10 to 15 minutes uphill. The shuttle bus and horse carriage have no timetable or reservations.
  • Anna Tirol asks you to bring your passport and any required visa. The tour requires moderate fitness. You cannot bring open drinks or loose snack foods into the vehicle.
  • Regular backpacks and handbags are allowed inside Neuschwanstein Castle; bulky luggage and hiking backpacks are excluded. Strollers cannot enter the castle rooms; the Ticket Center's family page gives a storage room in the courtyard. The castle's visitor information page prohibits photography and filming inside the castle.
  • Cancel at least 24 hours before your scheduled departure for a full refund; later cancellations receive no refund. Too few travellers can also lead to cancellation.
